The sounds presented herein were largely recorded by young people blessed with the innocence of youth, which made all things seem possible even as college, the draft, marriage, and the other responsibilities of the real world were bearing down upon them. Some 40 years later they still possess considerable charm, at the very least evoking the magical aura of the mid-1960s, and at their best standing as enduring musical statements.
(Frank Uhle)

The high quality of music released on Fenton was due in no small part to the skills of label head Dave Kalmbach and the unique sound of the Great Lakes Recording Studio. Described by rival studio owner Phil Roberts Jr. as "something of a genius on matters of electronics and sound," Kalmbach had originally operated out of a basement, but circa 1963 he partnered with Bruce Smith to move into the Our Theater in downtown Sparta, a few miles north of Grand Rapids.

Kalmbach, who played keyboards for Checkmate/Fenton instrumental group Dave and the Shadows, ran a laid-back operation that respected the needs of his young musicians. According to Kim Weighous of The Pedestrians, the engineer sat through close to 50 takes of "Think Twice" before getting one they were all satisfied with, finally emerging from the booth with his hands raised to yell, "Do we have a hit?" His patience was rewarded, as the record went on to become the number one song of 1966 in Grand Rapids, and many other sessions also benefited from his guiding hand.
